Cross-cultural missionaries and their families are on the front lines of both ministry leadership and cultural challenges. In a foreign environment, the challenges of adapting to a new culture while responding to the pressures of church planting often stretch missionaries to their limits. It is not uncommon for sending churches, agencies, and the missionaries themselves to neglect their own needs and steward their calling poorly in the midst of these cross-cultural ministry pressures. At ServingLeaders we are committed to providing robust services for missionaries and their teams.

Carl and Caroline

Our Missionary Care & Counseling Associates, Carl and Caroline Kishbaugh, joined ServingLeaders in 2022 to provide member care services for cross-cultural workers, their families, and their teams. Carl and Caroline have over 40 years of experience as missionaries in Haiti and France with World Team.

For the last 14 years of their time with World Team, they served as Global Member Care Directors, providing care and counseling for missionaries and their families, oversight and coaching for field leadership, collaboration with human resources services, stronger collaboration with sending churches, the development of a child safeguarding program (with the help of the Child Safety Protection Network), the creation and leadership of a response team handling allegations of child harm, a sexual integrity initiative to promote sexual wholeness for field staff, and debriefing intensives.

Presently through ServingLeaders, Carl and Caroline provide:

  • Care and counseling for cross-cultural workers and their families;

  • Personalized debriefings (3-5 days), offering time and space to safely review and process the accumulated events that have shaped life and ministry over a period of time (What is debriefing? Learn more.); and

  • Consultations for helping member care workers and leadership develop counseling and crisis response protocols, child safeguarding strategies, sexual wholeness initiatives, and training processes for change and transition.
